The search is a brand, a style, a size: "Blundstone 587 size 9 near me," "black midi dress medium tonight." Google and the assistants answer those at the variant level, from stores whose feed carries variants — which means the chains and the brand's own stores. Your boutique's edge is the curation and the fit; your shoe store's edge is the width and the half size the mall doesn't stock. Both are invisible unless the register publishes them. Search a piece you're proud to carry plus "near me." If the mall shows up and you don't, that's the dark shelf.

What this mix means for your store

Apparel is a cloud vertical: 28 of the 48 systems are cloud, and the five connected systems (Lightspeed Retail, Shopify POS, Square, Celerant and NCR Counterpoint) cover most of what independent boutiques and shoe stores run. The gap is on the other side of the connection. Only Lightspeed and Square appear on Google's free local inventory list, and no apparel-built system reports a retail delivery connector — Square's and Lightspeed's own delivery connections are their restaurant products. The enterprise suites on the list are there because regional chains run them, and their stores are just as absent from the near-me search as a single boutique on Square. Footwear is in the same table on purpose: shoe stores run the same systems, and width and half-size variants are the clearest case for a feed that answers at the variant level.
